31 May Why Tweezing and Plucking Hair is Bad for You
Tweezing or plucking hair is the most time-consuming and ineffective method of hair removal and yet so many people do it because it costs nothing (except perhaps time and heartache). Plucking hair can also lead to skin damage, irritation and ingrown hairs.
The results of a hair regeneration study also suggests that plucking hairs which grow in an area of more dense hair growth can actually cause more hair growth. The process is known as “quorum sensing”. Damaged follicles in the plucked region may collectively trigger a defense that stimulates regrowth of the plucked hair and cause new hairs to grow.
Tweezing and Plucking vs. Waxing
Tweezing and plucking are convenient for removing unwanted hair from smaller areas but removing hair from larger areas like the bikini line or brows is time-consuming and can cause a lot of unnecessary self-inflicted pain. Results of tweezing may only last two or three weeks.
Waxing has many advantages:
- Large areas can be treated in one session
- Less tedious and strenuous
- Longer lasting hair removal because hair is removed by the root
- Skin is smoother because no hair is left behind in the follicle
- Helps exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells
- Removes ingrown hairs without the irritation that plucking can cause
- Results typically last 6 weeks
- Waxing prices are affordable depending on the area or number of areas being waxed
Tweezing and Plucking vs. Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is one of the most effective treatments for removing unwanted hair. Laser works well for the face, underarms, arms, legs, and bikini line. The treatment is comfortable for most people – often described as a feeling similar to a small rubber band being snapped against the skin. For a day or two after the treatment, skin may feel warm or tingling like a very mild sunburn.
Laser has many advantages:
- Laser hair removal treatments are fast and precise
- Can target large areas of unwanted hair
- Laser damages the hair follicle – inhibiting growth for longer periods of time compared to plucking
- Reduces the risk of ingrown hairs
- Reduces redness, bumps and inflammation in surrounding skin often caused by plucking
- Unlike waxing, you don’ have to wait for hair to grow to a minimum length before it can be removed
- You see noticeable improvement in one session (up to 25% reduction of unwanted hair) and after several required treatments, your skin will remain noticeably hair-free and smooth for many months and up to a year in some cases
- Laser hair removal isn’t as costly as people assume. To keep costs down, you can treat smaller, more noticeable areas of unwanted hair such as the upper lip, chin, and underarms.
